Feminist responses to romance novels, particularly Harlequin Mills & Boon romances, have not infrequently been scathing: in 1980 Ann Douglas described them as a "subset of soft porn...The timing of the Harlequins' prodigious success has coincided exactly with the appearance and spread of the women's movement, and much of its increasingly antifeminist content reflects this symbiotic relationship". Here, Vivanco explores the ways in which some of the authors of two subsets of romances, including some who identify as feminists, struggle with gender definitions and sexual politics.
