• This study analyzes the validity of the individualization thesis on the levels of consciousness and action by investigating how class-specifity of attitudes and of voting behavior developed in West Germany over the years 1984, 1994, and 2004 using data from the basis of The German General Social Survey (ALLBUS). The results indicate that the influence of social class on attitudes toward social inequality has declined over time, while a parallel decrease in class-specific voting behavior is absent. These findings suggest that individualization in the socio-political area takes place at the level of consciousness rather than at the level of behavior. Adapted from the source document.
