Since the late 1980s, holidaymaking as a form of essentially passive, recreational space-time has been challenged by increasingly active forms of tourism involving the acquisition of skills packaged as training periods, offering participants unique experiences that will allow them to 'make a difference to the world' while simultaneously 'discovering themselves'. At the core of this new spectrum of travel offerings, ranging from 'humanitarian tourism' to 'adventure tourism', is spiritual tourism. The result is the emergence of quasi-pilgrimage tours, plugged into a new hard-wiring of the collective imagination that we have called 'individuo-globalism', while the traditional pilgrimage is increasingly obliged to conform to the same conceptual model. The phenomena resulting from this process fall neither into the category of tourism, properly speaking, nor into that of the traditional pilgrimage, but are emerging as a social reality with its own characteristics.
