• A paper given at a one-day conference held 19 May 2011 in Palazzo Graziani, Perugia, is presented. The author explores the process of the early mathematical codification of perspective, from the mid- 15th-c. geometrical perspective studies of Paolo Uccello to the late 16th-c. operational building strategy of Galeazzo Alessi, and the relation of this development of the "science" of design to the 1573 foundation of the Accademia di design (now Accademia di belle arti Pietro Vannucci) in Perugia, whose founding members included the painter Orazio Alfani (ca.1510-1583) and the architect and mathematician, Raffaello Sozi (act. 1561-1589).
