  • In old Turkish the present tense suffix was also used to mark the present continuous tense. During the historical development of Turkish, renewals happened in the continuous tense in order to mark the focal present continuous tense. These were formed in time through the grammarization of adverb-verb suffixes and postverbs (as in the -(X)yor [< adverb-verb + yori-r] suffix in Turkish as spoken in Turkey). Tuvan, which belongs to the northeastern branch of the Turkish language family, also includes suffixes, morphemes and compound structures used to mark the present tense. These can be divided into two main categories: focal present continuous tense markers (such as -(X)p tur, -(X)p cor, -- (X)p olur) and general present continuous tense markers (such as -- (X)r/-Ar, -AdIr, -BIsA:n). This study first describes in detail the continuous tense markers in Standard Tuvan. It also analyzes Altai Tuvan from the perspective of the continuous tense. In this way, the study aims to demonstrate the similarities and differences this regard between Standard Tuvan and Altai Tuvan. Adapted from the source document
