• In Muse and Drudge, Harryette Mullen has composed a long poem as blues, fragmented and improvisational, disjunctive in its continuities. Yet despite its disjunctions, Muse and Drudge retains elements of lyric. This dialogue with lyric is relatively rare among recent avant garde poets. Mullen constructs the lyric otherwise. Muse and Drudge is a poetic hybrid, a lyric long poem, a text that asserts hybridity both in its attention to overlapping identities and voices and in its form.
