• In 1859 Charles Grant went for a short stay in Jena, with the intention of acquiring a knowledge of German. He quickly became immersed in the art and literature of Germany, and devoted himself to writing about and translating works by Goethe, Kleist, and Heinein order to make these more accessible to English-speaking readers. At the same time he sought by means of his own knowledge of English literature to familiarize his German contemporaries with the works of English writers, especially George Eliot, with whom he was to establish personal contact. He was supported in this by his friendship with the German artists Marées and Hildebrand, and most of all with the marine biologist Feliz Anton Dohrn, who offered him a home at his new Zoological Station in Naples and provided him with introductions to leading English editors and writers.
