This article traces the origins ofRobert Burns's ‘‘A Man's a Man for A’' That' inScotland, then examines the reception ofFerdinand Freiligrath's‘‘Trotz alledem’' inGermany. Freiligrath wrote two versions of this song: histranslationof 1843 and anadaptationin 1848 addressing the revolutionary events of that year. While it was the translation which asserted itself in the nineteenth century, it was not until a.er the Second World War that Freiligrath's second version began to predominate. In the GDR and particularly in West Germany, ‘‘Trotz alledem’' was also textually adapted by singer-songwriters to highlight particular political concerns.
