The article examines John Heartfield's stay in Czechoslovakia between 1933 and 1938. Circumstances of his flight from Germany are discussed on the basis of archival materials, the reception of his photomontages for the Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung is revisited, and a new emphasis is placed on his contribution to Czech book design of the interwar period.
