Beschreibungen/Notizen
George Eliot's writing has been viewed as problematic from various modern critical perspectives. This article argues that these negative critiques tend to be based on critical or philosophical assumptions that her writing destabilises from the start, since there is no proto-Derridean aspect to her thinking that commentators critical of her either ignore or are unaware of. The article argues that attacks in particular by politically orientated critics can be deflected if this is taken into account. Affinities between Eliot and Derrida - especially her connections to the later Derrida in which political and ethical themes tend to dominate - are explored, with particular reference to affinities between Eliot and Derrida with regard to undecifability, hospitality, the messianic. Their complex relationship to the Enlightenment is also discussed. An awareness of the proto-Derridean nature of Eliot's thinking especially undermines conventional views of her commitment to altruism. (Author abstract)
