Beschreibungen/Notizen
George Eliot's reviews have typically been regarded as a mere prelude to her novels, which feature prominently in scholarship of nineteenth-century women's writing. Yet Eliot's most pointed statements about literary production and gender appear within the columns of the Westminster Review. In her early essays, Eliot describes the woman writer as not only a vital contributor to literary culture but as the originator and guardian of periodical criticism itself. By excavating the gender politics of Eliot's reviews in the light of nineteenth-century social theory, this article not only situates her as a forerunner to the modern feminist critic but also demonstrates the close lines of affiliation between the history of feminism and the prose tradition.
