Holton argues that Chaucer used the Bible historiale, alongside with the Vulgate. She reiterates that of all the Bibles alleged to have been used by Chaucer, the Wycliffite Bible is the easiest to dismiss. The idea that Chaucer used this English Bible was put forward in 1882 by J. H. Ramsay, who appears to be the only critic to find the argument convincing. Likewise, Dudley R. Johnson's claim that a French Bible was his primary source sharply overstates the case.
