  • Historians today frequently feel torn between the requirements of basic research (which implies scientific method and independent scholarship) and the demands of a society asking for relevance and readability. Two trends have developed within the craft since the nineteenth century: one, positivist and professional, oriented towards the sole production and transmission of knowledge; the other trying to broaden the historian's aims and to make history socially useful (hence the introduction of the notion of "applied history"). After analysing the assets as well as the perils of both approaches, the article argues that are conciliation between them appears possible provided a number of methodological requisites are met. Modern historians should not be afraid of new functions and new tasks in society.
