This article outlines the key features of "Mitleidsdramaturgie". For the benefit of clarity they are presented by way of contrast. A juxtaposition of pity and empathy reveals that Lessing draws on the former to explain tragedy's effect while employing the latter to provide the cause of tragic pleasure. The opposition of passion vs. reason helps to identify Lessing's sensualist ethics. A closer look at his interpretation of Aristotle points to Lessing's non-Aristotelian ideas. Finally, a comparison between tragedy's and fable's effects elucidates the literary angle from which Lessing approaches ethical questions.
