Highlights ► The capsule-deficient mutant strain of Streptococcus equi ssp. zooepidemicus was constructed. ► Transmission electron microscopy confirmed that the capsule was decreased in the mutant. ► The virulence of mutant was highly attenuated as more C3 deposition to the surface compared to the WT. ► A marked increased in the levels of IL-4 and IFN-γ mRNA in the mutant immunized mice. ► This attenuated vaccine could provide 100% protection against lethal challenge.
