• Beginning in the second century, religious imagery depicted the martyrdom of children based on the history of King Herod the Great ordering the death of young boys around the time of Jesus's birth. An essay is presented that examines such works dating to the 11th and 12th centuries in Spain. It examines the literary sources, such as hymns and homilies, and artists' attempts to understand this history and relate it in innovative iconography.
