If one follows Piekut's approach of seeing experimentalism primarily as a matter of potential groupings and conflict, e.g., a network of, say, John Cage versus skeptical orchestral musicians, this approach is in danger of lumping various kinds of music together, such as early examples of pure electronic and electroacoustic music, jazz, happenings, indeterminacy in the process of composition, or in the process of performance (all often discussed as experimental and experimental music); furthermore, one could go to any period in time and track down moments of conflict between protagonists trying to experiment and find new and audacious ways of making music versus traditionalists who would like not to be challenged. Some of the philosophical and theoretical density of his introduction might put off the interested lay person or a music undergraduate; its emphasis on theoretical and sometimes highly philosophical and sociological issues will appeal more to experienced researchers in the narrow field of experimental music, or to sociologists, philosophers, and readers interested in the ontology of (art) movements (including their "artificial construction"), or in politics.
