The cuplé was diffused in Latin America by all possible means and in all social sectors, from the late 19th century to the beginnings of the 1930's, contributing to the development of mass culture in the hispanic world. This article, deals with this diffusion, considering the origins of the cuplé and of the cupletistas in Spain and their export to America and appropriation in the region, with emphasis in the case of Chile. We consider the tours to America of the great cupletistas, the development of Cuban, Argentinian and Chilean ones, and their relation with the early musical industry in the region. Likewise, local features developed by the cuplé are discussed, considering performing practices, aesthetic features and social functions.
