  • [...]readers' tastes will direct their preferences in terms of what is covered: personally, I was most excited by his new take on heterosexuality and masculinity in STOS. Since this opens the book, my expectations were pleasurably heightened with the result that, unfortunately, I felt rather let down by subsequent chapters. Greven acknowledges the wide range of previously published academic work in the book's introduction: thereafter, however, he largely ignores existing scholarship, drawing on other fields for conceptual and theoretical models, and a quick perusal of the bibliography reveals that few post-2000 Trek publications are listed. When Greven uses Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) to discuss representation of gay male characters in chapter three, the only academic source he cites is Anne Billson's analysis in the BFI TV Classics volume from 2005.3 This book ignores the wealth of already published material on the show, something Greven compounds here, never mentioning more critical and nuanced examinations of sexuality in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
