Gwendolyn Brooks' 33-line lyric titled "the mother" was first published in 1945. This haunting and powerful work--a dramatic monologue in which a woman discusses and reacts to her numerous abortions--makes an immediate and emphatic impression, partly because it is so full of subtle artistry and deft poetic skill. Here, Evans turns to Brooks' splendid poem and examines it in some detail, emphasizing its skill as a piece of writing while not neglecting the host of "extrinsic" issues it raises.
