Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • According to this school of thought, Eliot's novels reflect ideological investments much in the way that other "social problem" novels do, by dramatizing the effects of ethical dilemmas, social forces, and events upon her characters. To this extent, "A College Breakfast-Party" fulfills Eliot's belief that the most advanced "form" - whether one is speaking of a literary production or a social body - must be heterogeneous in make-up. Since the conversation never culminates in a clear resolution, compromise, or synthesis of ideas, it might be tempting to view the poem as representing only a disjointed array of voices. [...]poetry must set aside secular differences in favor of an ideal, uncomplicated, and transparent truth that does not encourage debate. According to Eliot's prospectus for the review, the Westminster was committed to airing all political perspectives, placing "the conciliation of divergent views" above die editors' philosophical sympathies (3).
