An abstract of a study by Clary et al examining if resting metabolic rate (RMR) determined by indirect calorimetry differs from estimated energy needs derived from four predictive equations is presented. Results show that predictive equations are not sufficient estimators of daily energy needs in these two specific populations. Increased utilization of indirect calorimetry in clinical practice would facilitate individualized patient care and improve treatment outcomes for these populations.
