Pennies From Heaven and Bugsy Malone are just two of the many lesser-known movie musicals that are discussed in detail here, and elsewhere there are extended discussions of others, such as Lost Horizon (1973), A Little Night Music (1977), Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1978), Can't Stop the Music (1980) and One From the Heart (1982). Perhaps there were too many references to, and quotations from, Jane Feuer, Rick Altman, and other earlier and influential authors who wrote significant books about the musical film. Since her examples are extremely detailed, Kessler's ideas are already well supported and her constant referencing to others sometimes bogs down the prose. Thomas S. Hischak is the author of 22 books on theatre, film, and popular music, including The Oxford Companion to the American Musical, The Tin Pan Alley Song Encyclopedia, Through the Screen Door, and Theatre as Human Action.
