• Many midwives in Ontario worry that the trend towards increased medical technology erodes the goals of midwifery as a social movement that challenged the medicalisation of childbirth and the social control of women's bodies by patriarchal institutions. The overriding call of the international eff ort to stem the tide of maternal and infant deaths is now for "a skilled attendant at every birth" and recent data link this strategy to statistical improvements in maternal mortality rates.
