The novel San Manuel Bueno, mártir by Miguel de Unamuno is the focus of this interpretive study. The conflict between faith and doubt is the most prevalent theme of this novel. This conflict has two underlying causes and they are the perceived silence of God and the fear of death. This novel was analyzed in light of the Bible and Unamuno's philosophy as presented in his work Del sentimiento trágico de la vida and that of Mario J. Valdés' Death in the Literature of Unamuno. This thesis also explores how Unamuno uses symbolism to illustrate his philosophy and to draw his readers further into the conflict. The questions of faith proposed by this novel are answered with the help of works by Christian theologians like Kenneth Richard Samples' Without a Doubt: Answering the 20 toughest Faith Questions and C.S. Lewis' Mere Christianity.
