The third chapter, "The Interaction of Oral and Written in American Music History," compares oral and written traditions in American music from the seventeen century to the present using specific case studies, such as psalm singing, musical theater, shape note singing, and African American traditions. On music education she writes that "[b]ecause of our strong cultural belief in the necessity of discovering and nurturing musical talent at an early age . . . educational systems have been developed that leave out a large section of the populace to focus on the promising ones- and yet the neglected majority continues to enjoy music and use it in a fairly sophisticated, if self taught way" (p. 141).
