The Pennsylvania German immigrant Conrad Beissel founded a community (Ephrata) in which a form of mystical song based on Jakob Böhme's theory of Adamic speech was both practiced and propounded. That this theology of song was so central to the community's identity can be shown both through the theoretical statements of community leaders and, more importantly, through the changes in the publication of Beissel's numerous hymnals.
