  • Replies to comment Relational competence theory: Research and mental health applications (see record 2010-13731-000) by James Schmidt on original article A proposed model for assessing, understanding, and modifying what we "bring to the table" in interpersonal relationships: Close, but no cigar (see record 2010-23990-001) by Luciano L'Abate, et al. My coauthors and I appreciate receiving the chance to respond to James Schmidt’s review of our book. First, Schmidt repeatedly calls our theory, which we go to great lengths to explain in its pyramidal, hierarchical structure, a model. Second, rather than criticizing the length and complexity of the instruments presented in Relational competence theory, Schmidt might have allowed himself time to administer those tests to himself, since they are available in the appendixes of the volume. If he had done this, he would have found that some of the tests take minutes to administer and to score. Perhaps the most serious omission of the review is that it overlooks three entire chapters dedicated to lifelong learning, promotion, prevention, and psychotherapy. To his credit, we readily agree with Schmidt that our style is not for Main Street or Wall Street. This book was written for serious researchers and scholars. We modestly agree with him that we “have created a potentially powerful” theory (not a model) as defined above, “for understanding relational competence” (¶ 17). Additionally, we appreciate Schmidt’s call for further research and have already taken steps to ensure that relational competence theory is not relegated to the dustbins of history (Cusinato & L’Abate, in press).
