• This qualitative case study explored the practices, programs, and processes within one urban charter high school. The school has been in existence for ten years and has a history of attracting and retaining students who have been described as "at risk" of academic failure. The study was designed to provide an in-depth, rich understanding of the procedures and routines which support student success and retention within this single school. Further, it utilized comprehensive focus groups, individual interviews, surveys, and demographic questionnaires to elucidate the motivation of students, families, and staff members in their selection and persistence at this particular school. Three major themes emerged from participant responses: (a) people and relationships; (b) school climate and culture; and (c) student centered curricula.
