• Between 1973 and 1975, the stock market plunged as well, with the Dow Jones Industrials index dropping from over 1,000 in early 1973 to around 600 in December 1974 (4). [...] if one followed the newspapers, the mid-1970s were not a good time for young people to embark on a new business venture, especially one based on a belief that within a few years consumers would want - and be willing to pay for - a device that until then had not only cost thousands, sometimes millions of dollars, but had also been hidden from public view. [...] in retelling this story, one may forget that this "revolution" in computing was based on fundamental research in the physical sciences, much of it done many decades earlier by researchers who remain unknown to all but a few dedicated scholars.
