Wachtel's book, Relational Theory and the Practice of Psychotherapy (see record 2008-01938-000). L'Abate argues with Wachtel that criticism, is the price we pay when we choose the public arena. No one is immune to criticism, including myself. Criticisms can improve our work, or we can deny the validity or fairness of criticisms by attacking their author. You chose to attack me rather than remain within the domain of ideas. L'Abate feels that Wachtel attempts to attack his credentials as a hostile reviewer of psychoanalysis. However, L'Abate accuses Wachtel of missing the whole point of the review. L'Abate states he is not against psychoanalysis, but against vacuous verbosity as a way to convince readers of the importance and relevance of one's theorizing, let alone one's clinical practice.
