• Reviews the book, Doing couple therapy: Craft and creativity in work with intimate partners by Robert Taibbi (see record 2009-08197-000). In this book, the author doesn't state that it is the complete guide to couple therapy, but the implication is there, and, as a result, the text tends to be a bit confusing. However, Taibbi does provide several step-based approaches to help new therapists feel a sense of control in the consultation office. From a theoretical perspective, it appears that the author is a strong supporter of cognitive–behavioral-driven couple therapy. Yet in many places throughout the text there is clear reference and support for a psychodynamic approach to couple therapy. In general, the reviewer states that he got "the feeling when coming across these sections that the author wanted to say much more but was forced to be succinct." No one can fault a valiant attempt to create a cookbook for graduate students on their way toward developing an expertise in their field. Taibbi suggests that no such text existed in couple therapy for him when he was a graduate student. Perhaps so, and if that was true, one should have been developed. The reviewer believes that this book is "much too short to address professional presentation of oneself, but at least there is awareness. Such is the theme of the book.
