Reviews the book, Handbook of homework assignments in psychotherapy: Research, practice, and prevention by Nikolaos Kazantzis and Luciano L'Abate . The title Handbook of Homework Assignments in Psychotherapy: Research, Practice, and Prevention might conjure up mental images of a large tome filled with cognitive-behavioral therapy homework assignments, handily referenced by disorder so as to be easily photocopied and provided to patients. Although such a work would be welcome in its own right, this handbook is quite different; taking a broad and inclusive perspective, Handbook of Homework Assignments in Psychotherapy considers theoretical and practical aspects of integrating homework into treatment from multiple therapeutic orientations and for various disorders. The preface states that book is intended for clinicians with various levels of experience from all the mental health professions; its goals are to facilitate the integration of homework into therapy and to describe the use of homework for the prevention of mental illness. A careful reading of the book reveals that it meets the first of these objectives quite well. This book presents multiple approaches to the integration of homework into therapy, including perspectives from nine theoretical orientations plus psychotherapy integration, as well as research and practical case examples. This inclusiveness is to be commended, as it lends to the overall strength and contributions of the work. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
