  • 2 procedures for giving a learner knowledge of which responses are incorrect were developed to produce hypothesized variations in searching orientation of Ss, i.e., Ss hypothesizing as to why responses were incorrect. Although searching orientation was not observed directly, predictions were made regarding how variations in searing orientation would effect naming and defining concepts, i.e., certain common attributes of a group of geometrical designs presented on cards. It was found that the group assumed to do more searching learned to give significantly more definitions of concepts, but hypotheses that the searching group would learn to name more concepts in fewer trials were not upheld.
