Reviews the book, Frontiers in Social Movement Theory edited by Aldon D. Morris and Carol McClurg Mueller (1992). This book is not directly about social movements, however. Instead, it critically evaluates the development of social movement theory within sociology. This collection of essays is the outgrowth of a conference held at the University of Michigan in 1988 by prominent social movement scholars. Twenty-two sociologists contributed 15 essays that clearly have other sociologists as their intended audience. No single chapter provides a dedicated history of social movement theory for nonsociologists, but many provide commentaries that, taken together, sketch an interesting portrait of recent progress in the field Psychologists reading the book will find much that is familiar. This book portrays a dynamic subfield of sociology actively reaching out for new ideas to complete (or repair or replace) a dominant macro-level approach to social movement analysis.
