Reviews the book, The sexual self: The construction of sexual scripts edited by Michael Kimmel (see record 2007-00588-000). In his review, Luciano L'Abate commends the editor for assembling topics seldom included in psychological treatises on sex and sexuality. L'Abate believes this volume represents another benchmark in the progression from a reductionistic to an interactionistic view of sexuality. However, L'Abate laments the fact that the authors in the book overlook the "socially constructed" work of many current theorists. The book is divided into four sections: (a) four chapters on sexualities and selves; (b) six chapters on sexual scripts; (c) two chapters on sexual behavior; and (d) three chapters on sexual oppression, sexuopharmacology, and knowledge production. The emphasis in this volume is on sexual diversity rather than on traditional views of heterosexuality as the norm and any other type of sex and sexuality as abnormal and deviant. In the body of the review, L'Abate discusses in more detail issues related to human agency and the socially constructed nature of sexuality. And he concludes that even though most of the contributors represent sociological disciplines, he believes that clinical psychologists, psychotherapists, sex researchers, and therapists would benefit greatly by reading this book.
