  • Reviews the book, An Introduction to GLBT Family Studies, edited by Jerry J. Bigner (see record 2006-09743-000). The book includes the family in a topic that thus far has been conceived as being strictly intraindividual rather than relational. It is organized in three parts: (a) gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) family issues (seven chapters), (b) special issues in GLBT family studies (four chapters), and (c) clinical issues in GLBT family studies (three chapters). Most chapters are devoted to either gay or lesbian persons within their families of origin and of choice (rather than families of procreation). However, there is at least one chapter devoted exclusively to transgender persons (Israel) and one to bisexual persons (Buxton). Regardless of its very enlightening contents, there are at least five themes that run rampant throughout the chapters of this volume, either by commission or by omission: (a) the traumatic importance of coming out, (b) the contradictory avoidance of emotional intimacy, (c) an emphasis on the functional and avoidance of the dysfunctional, (d) the pars pro toto fallacy of sexual identity, and (e) the paucity of theories to describe and "explain" diverse sexual behavior.
