  • Reviews the book, Attachment in adulthood: Structure, dynamics, and change by Mario Mikulincer and Phillip R. Shaver (see record 2007-12400-000). The book summarizes more than 20 years of research emanating from the dimensions of anxiety and avoidance in their connections to as many personality and relationship variables as one can find in the literature. The reviewer commends the authors for putting together an extraordinary volume. The hierarchical structure of the book begins with an analysis of attachment dimensions, proceeds to intrapersonal representations of self and others, continues with interpersonal manifestations of attachment systems, includes applications of theories to psychopathology and psychotherapy (including group and organizational settings), and concludes with an epilogue that deals with meditation, mindfulness and Buddhism in their relationship to attachment. Seven appendices include various scales, questionnaires, and structured interviews that can be used to evaluate attachment processes and prototypes. One critique the reviewer raises lies in the book's free use of terms that do not belong to attachment per se, raising the question of whether the authors are dealing with a theory or a model. In addition, there are a few studies related specifically to attachment that are omitted in this comprehensive volume. But the reviewer concludes by commending the authors for a superb book that should be a must read for all psychologists. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
