Reviews the book, Explaining Communication: Contemporary Theories and Exemplars edited by Bryan B. Whaley and Wendy Samter (see record 2006-21534-000). Books like Explaining Communication: Contemporary Theories and Exemplars make me aware of how narrow some of us psychologists are in dealing with behavior and with human relationships without any theories. We have models, but theories are few and far between (Beach & Fincham, 2003; L'Abate & Cusinato, in press). This volume, on the other hand, is so chockfull of theories that it made my head spin. Nine of the titles in 21 chapters composing this volume contain the term theory, to the point that if a title of a chapter does not contain that term, one has to wonder why not. Was that chapter representative of a paradigm, a model, or something more or less than a theory? Admittedly, some of the topics in this volume were more familiar to me than others. Even though this volume is supposedly written for undergraduates, the level of writing is quite high, making me wonder how bright and well informed undergraduate communication majors must be in comparison to undergraduate psychology majors. Nonetheless, to accommodate an undergraduate audience, many chapters start with a concrete vignette, anecdote, or example to capture the student's attention. All chapters end with a list of suggested readings in addition to references, as well as final questions to ponder and answer about the contents of each chapter. All chapters include a review of the relevant research to support the validity of a particular aspect or theory, as well as counterarguments and critiques about that particular aspect or theory. As a whole I enjoyed reading this book, but I lament how disciplinary differences would not allow some psychologists to benefit by its contents.
