Reviews the book, The stuff of thought: Language as a window into human nature by Steven Pinker (see record 2007-14983-000). The purpose of this book is to expose and expand on Pinker's theory of conceptual semantics, namely, how language is understood at various levels--individual, dyadic, relational, situational, contextual, regional, and cultural--with positive and negative interpretations of reality. Instances include how words downgrade or exaggerate abuse, how names follow cycles of fashion, and how linguistic usages are affected by style with holistic effects, literally "how choices among words can make a psychological difference" (p. 120). The reviewer recommends this book as a text for first-year introductory graduate courses in cognitive psychology or psycholinguistics as well as for graduate students in the same disciplines looking for a dissertation topic and desirous of updating and enlarging their knowledge base.
