Reviews the book, Relational Theory and the Practice of Psychotherapy by Paul L. Wachtel (see record 2008-01938-000). L'Abate was eagerly waiting to read this book, expecting perhaps an update in psychoanalytic jargon, new ideas, and even more effective ways to do psychotherapy. However, he was sorely disappointed in his expectations. The entire book is based on the discovery that patients have relationships and that those relationships are important, a fact ignored in previous monadic psychoanalytic formulations. This book is still fixated in the 20th century, years away from current psychological theories and practices, by creating a world of its own, with its own terms, opinions, arguments, and counterarguments, defying, denying, and even demonizing the scientific method and currently validated professional practices. In so doing, this book places itself outside of the scientific and professional psychological community, apparently deriving and perhaps receiving its support and affirmation instead from a narrow circle of like-minded colleagues.
