Attending to our response forms part of Valis's insistence on locating ourselves as critics, not pretending that we stand on neutral ground, but instead 'explaining our terms of engagement with the text' (57). 'Reading' also draws our attention to Valis's practice of close reading; in piece after piece, she delves into the detail of one passage, or even one sentence, in order suggestively to illuminate a whole novel. In 'Confession and the Body in Emilia Pardo Bazán's Insolación', for instance, the contexts she evokes for the novel include critical reactions from its original publication year (including Clarín's review) and from contemporary critics; discourses on hygiene (drawing on the work of Alain Corbin, as well as looking at specifically Spanish texts, including medical topographies); Mary Douglas's anthropological approach to the body and dirt; and Bakhtinian notions of carnival.
