Gibbs traces the development of rock music in Vietnam, starting with its origins in the South and a similar evolution in the North. Rock has recently enjoyed a resurgence in Vietnam, despite being viewed with suspicion by the country's communist government who have characterized it as a neo-colonial poison. Contemporary rock musicians in Vietnam have tried to adapt rock music to local conditions, making it part of a wider struggle between local and global.
