• Abstract Presented here is a beginning exploration of music therapy treatment for couples in a general in-patient medical setting. Multiple sources have documented the deleterious effects that illness and the hospital experience can have on intimate partnerships, including decreased communication and marital conflict. This article illuminates the ways that music therapy sessions can proffer positive interactions, promoting the intimacy and emotional openness that can be diminished through the stress of illness and in-patient medical treatment. Case material illustrates the potential that music therapy has to nurture communication, closeness, and expressions of love during disquieting and potentially distancing experiences in the hospital.
