• The development of theories of solid deformable body mechanics in the development of methods to determine mechanical properties of metals, impact strength, crack resistance has been reviewed. A fundamentally new method to identify metals with respect to operational reliability has been formulated. Here, the well-known mathematical model of a viscoelastic medium is taken as a basis to describe the deformation of metals under the influence of loads with a non-zero strain rate up to destruction. The performance of the new method is shown using specific experimental data. It is economical, reliable, and easy to use.
