Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This dissertation examines questions of borderlands, migration, and race in an array of contemporary Mexican fiction, poetry, films, photographs, and performances, that aesthetically respond to the crossing of Central American migrants and transcontinental refugees through Mexico as a territory of “transit” or “waiting.”Using an interdisciplinary theoretical framework (migration, border, critical geography, critical race theory, and cultural studies), my research brings the southern Mexican border, usually relegated to the margins, to the fore to highlight a racialized geography where the specters of colonialism of the past overlap with the violence of migrant and refugee displacement in the present. I argue that the Mexican southern border is an ongoing palimpsest where multiple impositions of the nation-state, imperial discourses, racial formation, and historical processes of dispossession and violence take place. I also shed light on a region where transhistorical interchange and the fighting spirit of people converge and live on. I conclude that despite the violence of the border crossing, memory is an embodied practice through which the history and the everyday struggles of this region are preserved.
