  • Gillian et al explore the use of Participatory Action Research (PAR) in a large-scale prisons research project aimed at promoting knowledge equity. The project, titled "Coping with Covid in Prisons," was conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic and involved incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals as peer researchers. The PAR methodology allowed for the inclusion of lived experience and the empowerment of those with direct knowledge of the criminal justice system. The paper discusses the challenges faced in implementing PAR in the prison setting, such as Covid-related restrictions and staff buy-in, as well as the benefits of using this approach, including the generation of authentic and accurate data. The collaboration between academic and lived experience partners was not always smooth, but it resulted in a rich diversity of knowledge and the potential for meaningful change. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of centering lived experience in criminal justice research and the need for humility and collaboration in academic and lived experience partnerships.
