Positive connections between men in prison are often overlooked in academic research, but recent studies have highlighted the existence of intimacy and camaraderie among imprisoned men. In this paper, we utilize a collaborative writing approach to examine friendships between imprisoned men, with one author sharing their personal experiences and an academic providing a wider narrative. This approach encourages openness and deepens insights into sensitive topics like friendships during incarceration. We discuss the similarities and differences between friendships inside and outside of prison, including the role of shared interests, values, bonding experiences, and disagreements. We also highlight the unique dynamics of imprisoned friendships, such as the function of safety, shared trauma, and imposed intimacy, and the potential psychological risks associated with these dynamics. Our collaboration demonstrates the value of knowledge equity in prison research and opens up new avenues for understanding and exploring friendships in the prison context.
