Mixed-species planted forests are recognized as a nature-based solution for climate change mitigation and adaptation. These forests, which are more resilient than monocultures, are less susceptible to disturbances such as pest outbreaks and extreme weather events. They also have the potential to deliver multiple ecosystem services at higher levels than monocultures. Governments around the world have made commitments to increase the global forest area, but there are concerns that large-scale tree planting may focus on a small number of species, exacerbating climate risks. Afforestation, reforestation, and ecosystem restoration are important solutions for carbon dioxide removal and can contribute to limiting global warming. Sustainable sourcing of wood products from forests can also help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Here, the importance of diverse planted forests in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals is highlighted.
