  • Water pollution is a high-priority subject in the European Environmental Policy. Among other organic pollutants, phenol is spilled by many industries and its discharge concentration is limited due to its high toxicity to people and aquatic organisms. Cyclodextrins are cyclic oligosaccharides which are able to form inclusion complexes with hydrophobic substances. Occasionally, crosslinking of cyclodextrin is suitable in order to control its solubility without losing its inclusion ability. In this work, the application of an insoluble polymer of β-cyclodextrin (PβCD) as support in a fluidized bed biological reactor (FBBR) has been studied in order to remove phenol from water. The polymer beads previously synthesized were classified and hydrodynamically characterized. The results were compared with other common supports described by general equations. The operation of the fluidized bed biological reactor was evaluated for different working conditions, analyzing the effect of different operation parameters on its biodegradative activity. The performance of the FBBR was compared with which a completely stirred tank reactor. Biodegradative activity of FBBR was characterized by a simple model based on two typical kinetics of biological growth. Finally, the performance of the FBBR was studied working under several disturbances in order to evaluate the operational robustness of the PβCD support. Thus, variable periods of starvation were applied, as well as shockloads of variable magnitude and duration. In addition, the influences of adding extra nutrients and of retiring the oxygen supply were studied.
